Tuesday 19th January. Dunblane Local History Society Meeting at the Cathedral Halls Dunblane at 7.30pm. - ‘Scotland’s Vitrified Forts : A Burning Issue’. Our speaker will be well known local archaeologist Dr Murray Cook. Come along to our first meeting of 2016 and hear from Murray about the mysteries of Vitrified Forts in Scotland. Vitrified forts where the stone ramparts have been melted and fused together were first identified in the 18th century and were long thought to be unique in Scotland. What was there origin and what purpose did they serve? New research by the speaker sheds light onto these iconic Scottish monuments. Visitors are very welcome. Admission £1.50 which includes tea/coffee and biscuits
• Wednesday 27th January, Scottish Women’s Institute, meet for a craft evening. 7.30pm in the Victoria Hall. Everyone Welcome, £3.50 for visitor entry.

Saturday 23rd January, A Family Quiz Night will be held in St Mary’s Church Hall at 6.30pm. Cost is £5 for adults and £3 for children aged 5 to 15. A light Supper will be served but please bring your own soft drink. All proceeds of the evening will go towards the work of the Scottish Bible Society. Don’t worry if you are not part of a team. Come anyway as teams will be made up on the night.

Scottish Opera has recently appointed Oliver Rundell as its Chorus Master, though he is no stranger to the company as he was on the music staff from 2002 to 2010. He is working on Dvořák’s Rusalka, which opens in April, and we will hear about that and the job in general. All very welcome. 2.30 pm, Smith Art Gallery and Museum, Stirling. Tuesday 16th February, Dunblane Local History Society Meeting at the Cathedral Halls Dunblane at 7.30pm. ‘The History of Alloa Inch- A once inhabited island in the River Forth’ . Our speaker will be local naturalist and historian Dr Roy Sexton. Roy will describe the fascinating story of how a mud bank in the River Forth was converted into an island that was successfully farmed for 170 years by resident farmers before the farm was abandoned in 1983 and became a salt marsh nature reserve owned by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Visitors are very welcome. Admission £1.50 which includes tea/coffee and biscuits.
