A Grand Day Out!

Dunblane Primary School

P5A and P5M booked a school trip to Dundee Discovery Centre as we were learning about Explorers. Then we found out that we were going to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge! At the Discovery Centre we learned about Captain Scott who went to explore Antarctica. He was trying to be the fi rst team to reach the South Pole but as we learned they were in a race with a Norwegian team who beat them to the Pole. During our trip we got to go on Captain Scott’s boat Discovery which is over 100 years old and still standing today. There were offi cers and crew on the ship and we saw where they slept and ate. At the end of our tour we lined up in front of the Discovery to greet and cheer Prince William and Princess Kate who were visiting Dundee. Lots of the children got to shake hands and speak to the Royal Highnesses. Holly Smith presented the Duchess with a beautiful bouquet of fl owers that Mrs. Grant had made. You may have seen some of our photographs in the newspaper and we were also on the BBC News.

What’s happening in our school?

At Dunblane Primary School we have created the school’s fi rst ever newspaper. It is called the DPS Daily. The DPS Daily has all the information about Dunblane Primary you need and some fun activities. The Roving Reporters is the Citizenship group that writes all the articles for the DPS Daily and has reporters from P4 to P7.

We are currently working on our Christmas edition of the DPS Daily which is going to include reviews of the school nativity show by P1 and P2 called “McTivity” and the pantomime that the whole school went to see at the McRobert Centre, “The Little Mermaid.” We had lots of ideas about what we could include in the Christmas edition including some Christmas jokes.

For some of our reports we have to interview pupils and staff - for example fi nding out what pupils thought of our Halloween Disco. When we have all the reports ready for the newspaper we have to see what it looks like when it is all put together. As it is printed and copies are given to each class in the school we have to make sure it is accurate. We also hope that pupils fi nd it interesting and enjoyable to read.
