New history of Dunblane Football
by Andy Mitchell A Dunblane man has just published a book about the town’s famous football team, known as the Heather, which was once a force to be reckoned within Scottish football.
Dunblane was extraordinarily successful for a small town club and local historian Andy Mitchell has written its story in Come Awa’ the Heather!
In the club’s heyday in the 1890s, thousands of spectators crammed into Duckburn Park to see their heroes, with torch-lit processions through the streets to celebrate their many cup successes.
Andy has put together an entertaining account of the key events and personalities, with a complete who’s who of the Dunblane players and a record of all the club’s results. He tells how the team won the Perthshire Cup a dozen times, produced international quality players and banged in a barrowload of goals against top teams like St Johnstone and Dunfermline.
Come Awa’ the Heather, the story of Dunblane Football Club is on sale at £9.99 (post free) online at
www.scottishsporthistory or by sending a cheque to Andy Mitchell, 7 Braeport, Dunblane FK15 0AT. It is also available at Meldrum’s Newsagent in Dunblane
