Make a big wall poster with your child containing all his or her measurements, and not just the obvious ones – height, length of leg, arm, fi nger and feet, hand span, circumference of wrist, chest, neck, and around the head.

As with most things, measurement principles are learnt most easily when they relate to oneself.

Decorate your measurement poster with traced outlines of the hands and feet of other members of the family so that your child can compare sizes. Or you could dip hands and feet in paint to make prints with them.

Use the measurements to compare with others, width of doors, cupboards, height of chairs and tables. Demonstrate how measurements started with actual feet by pacing the length of a room. Talk about why measurement is needed. Use tape measures and rulers to see if a certain piece of furniture can pass through a doorway, or if a small bed will fi t a tall person.
