Make 2016 the year when you achieve those resolutions

So Christmas will soon be a distant memory, all that planning and excitement, rich food, the frenzy of buying and wrapping gifts and those parties and gatherings with family and friends. It seems to be over more and more quickly every year but that bittersweet moment when it’s time to take the tree down and pack away the decorations for another year can also represent a golden opportunity to focus on a bright shiny new year with opportunity and promise stretching straight ahead.

Last month we talked about those resolutions that appear on the New Year ‘to do’ list every year and are often abandoned by February. Did you know, for instance, that 70% of people who set resolutions will have abandoned them by the third week in January and of the 30% who keep on going, 90% of them will have given up by June. Which percentage bracket are you in?

Why not make 2016 the year when you achieve those goals? The year when you stop smoking, take up meaningful exercise, see friends and family, change careers and still manage somehow to fi nd more time for you.

The year when you manage to fi nd yourself in the top 5% with those who do follow through and achieve what they set out to achieve at the beginning of 2016.

Follow these tips for setting and achieving your goals to really keep yourself on track;

Always state your goals in the present tense. Write them as if they are happening now and always in the positive. Your subconscious mind doesn’t process negative so write what you do want not what you don’t, if you say “I don’t want to be overweight’ your focus is on being overweight.

If you want to test

this out for yourself now, try this simple exercise. Whatever you do, don’t think about a pink elephant What was the fi rst thing that came in to your head?

That’s exactly what happens when you say ‘I don’t want a boring job’ ‘I don’t want to drink too much’ or I don’t want to keep inventing new excuses why I can’t go to the gym’

Have a clear picture of where you want to get to, what do you really want? Be realistic about where are you now in relation to your goal.

The next vital step is to really see yourself having achieved your aim, think about how you will feel,

what you will see around you, what people will say to you.

This is a vital and enjoyable step, if you can visualise and imagine yourself achieving that dream job, your perfect weight, new healthy habit you will really be able to make the changes you want to make. The fi rst step is to see yourself in your new, healthy state and to really focus on that picture.

Make sure that your goal is achievable by putting the right things in place to help you achieve your outcome. It sounds obvious but it’s worth remembering that none of us is going to be given additional days or hours in the week to fi t new tasks and activities in to our crammed schedule no matter how exciting the goal. It is really useful to begin keeping a journal of how you currently use your time. It can be an eye-opening experience to see the day’s tasks, activities and how much of our time we devote to them, written down.

Clients often tell me they want to start a big new project but when we take a look at their journal and see what they currently pack in to their time, it quickly becomes clear why they are not fi tting in the things they say they want to do. Most people soon become aware that some of their current activities need to be restructured or shelved if anything new is going to happen.

New goals need determination and energy and above all, they need focus.

List any blocks that stand between you and your goal and formulate a plan to help overcome them. Break the tasks involved down into daily units.

Finally, don’t forget to get your support structure in place by telling the people who will support you and not those who are going to struggle when their drinking companion, smoking shelter mate or shopping and cake friend decides to change forever.
