Fort Edmonton Park, a key tourist lure in the city, is a reconstruction, situated about eight kilometres southwest of the legislature. Other sites worth a visit are the Royal

Albert Museum and the Art Gallery of Alberta, both featuring the culture and art of local First Nations. On the east side of town is the bed-

room community of Sherwood Park, a sprawling suburb of about 65,000 that is still independent of the capital city. North, on the other side of Highway 16 (the Yellowhead Highway), the city continues to spread and where once was a working class district, there is now a series of newer suburbs; the population of Edmonton proper is around 880,000 with the metropolitan area home to some 1.3 million. No visit to Edmonton would be com- plete without a drive out to the Devoni- an Botanical Garden, 15 minutes south- west of Edmonton. Highlighted by the Japanese garden, arching bridges, a tea house and pavilion, it was established in 1959. It is Canada’s most northerly bo- tanical garden. Garden lovers will also want to drop into the Muttart Conser- vatory, distinguished by four pyramidal glass houses that contain an eclectic col- lection of plant material. Now that you’ve come this far,

it

would be a pity not to take a side trip to Jasper, only a four hour drive west. Te year-round town, with a population of just over 4,100, is home to numer- ous gift shops and art galleries. Wildlife often shares the streets with the tourists. Drop into the famed Jasper Park Lodge for a meal or, better still, stay there and enjoy the indoor/outdoor swimming pool that offers a breathtaking view of the mountains. You will feel transported back to a gentler time when telephone calls to diners were announced with a discreet gong. You can also take a guided horseback

ride up into the mountains to explore the stunning landscape and get up close and personal with the wildlife. To make the journey totally authentic, take the train. Via Rail offers round trip service from Jasper to Edmonton at a very reasonable rate of about $150, de- pending on the season. In Alberta, Calgary tends to steal the

show away from its northern cousin, but when all is said and done, Edmonton of- fers a warmer, more human experience. Te people are friendly, the restaurants good and the hotels comfortable. For more info visit exploreedmonton.com.
