Hot Eats in The ‘Peg

Bernstein’s Delicatessen 1-1700 Corydon Ave.

If you are only in Winnipeg for a quick visit, you owe it to yourself to make the short drive over the St. James bridge to 1700 Corydon Ave. Awaiting you there will be a sublime, house-made corned beef sandwich. Bernstein’s Delicates- sen hand slices the still-warm corned beef extra thick and they pile it high on a thick slice of Gunn’s Bakery rye. You can order it lean if you are watching your waistline, but since you will just have to

have their hand-cut, skinny French fries too, why bother? On my last visit, I was tempted to order shakshuka, but then the chicken and waf- fles caught my attention. Te “waffles” are really pancakes but who was I to mince words when the pancakes and chicken fingers were served smothered with blue- berry compote and chipotle maple syrup? Also highly recommended are Ber- nstein’s soups, any of them. If you don’t want to stay, take them to go. bernsteinsdeli.com

Sushi Terrace 106 Browning Blvd.

Located deep in the Westwood neigh- bourhood of St. James/Assiniboia, Su- shi Terrace is worth the navigation time. We commenced with a tempura bas- ket including two savory spring rolls, two succulent prawns and a bevy of veggies including squash, sweet po- tato, broccoli and more. Te sweet chili and soy dipping sauces were more than plentiful. Te bulging basket is enough food for a meal on its own!

Next up were our three rolls of choice: the Burning Love special, the Happy Mouth (I got a kick out of the name) and the Crunch Roll. Te Burning Love was a delicious melding of cucumber, red roe, shrimp and torched salmon. Te Happy Mouth lived up to its name with variations of the above and silky avocado added for good measure. My favourite, however, was the Crunch Roll, as I love the popping sensation of the fish eggs with the additional crunch of crispy panko flakes.
