Stylos finger posts enhance pedestrian experience in Rotherham

When Rotherham MBC decided to update, expand and co-ordinate Town Centre pedes- trian wayfinding signage, they chose the Sty- los finger post system made by William Smith. “Having worked with William Smith and

used the Stylos system in the past, it was the logical choice to continue the partnership,” says Rotherham MBC’s Richard Pardy.

Over the years a number of changes

had taken place in the town centre, including the relocation of the council services and the library to a single dedicated building. So they reviewed existing pedestrian finger post signs, with a view to improve and update the town centre finger post signing strategy. They decided to replace them because

of the changes required to update informa- tion, and the effects of wear and tear and vandalism over the years. Around 45 new Stylos finger post units

have been installed with new arm and cap designs, with bolder text in white on a black background. A protective overlaminate film was added to enable the removal of graffiti without damage to the sign face. Base col- lars were also added to complement the style of lighting columns and bollards used in the town centre. “The new design provides a clean and

consistent look to the wayfinding scheme in Rotherham, yet it’s in keeping with the style of the town centre,” says Richard. “The in- crease in the number of signs aims at closing gaps found in the old route system. And also directs pedestrians to destinations further afield that were previously either not signed or didn’t exist when the original pedestrian wayfinding scheme was implemented.” The Stylos finger posts have also been

adapted to accommodate 3-D printed touch points which contain QR codes and have NFC chips embedded within them, enabling visitors to access 'Hello City and Shop Local' information.

Stylos is a flexible yet robust and van-

dal resistant system that is easy to install. It can be designed to fit in with any environ- ment, whether rural, urban, historic or mod- ern.

Stylos fingerpost and display panel

signs can be supplied as complete units or in component form, ready to assemble.
