GLASGOW BUSINESS OCTOBER 2015

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S BLOG

Making an impact on the Glasgow economy

Now is the ideal time to assess the impact of the Commonwealth Games on Glasgow’s tourism. The legacy from the Games comes in many forms, from new business contracts for our members to the longer-term regeneration of the East End. But at the top of our list of the desired legacy effects is a sustained boost to leisure visitor trade. Of course, it’s pretty obvious that our retail,

leisure and hospitality businesses would all welcome more customers, but a related boost would be the increase in demand that inbound leisure visitors could bring to our rail and air transport networks. Growing the list of route destinations from

Glasgow Airport would help our entire business community in connecting to overseas markets. Read more at: www.glasgowchamberof commerce.com/blog/2015/august/13/bright- outlook-for-glasgow-tourism/

You may already know that the Chamber chose to support Heathrow Airport in its bid for the additional

runaway capacity that is needed around London. The Howard Davies Commission took three years to review the issues, received more than 70,000 submissions from consultees and, in its final 342-page report, there is unanimous support among the

commissioners for a new north-west runway at Heathrow. I should say that we don’t feel a sense of triumph

or self-satisfaction from this recommendation. We chose Heathrow for reasons very specific to the business needs of Glasgow Chamber members. Read more at: www.glasgowchamberof commerce.com/blog/2015/july/03/howard- commission-sets-out-its-views/

Chambers of Commerce vary worldwide. Some are voluntary, city-based organisations like Glasgow, some are public law bodies with statutory backing (where every business must join), and others play regulatory roles or have a regional or national role. Some are long established with a proud

heritage, others are much newer. Common throughout is a passion for trade, all believing in the power of free trade to bring countries closer together, grow our economies, and create wealth and jobs.

But there is also a hugely inspiring strand of

common practice in encouraging our members to give back to the community. Read more at: www.glasgowchamberof commerce.com/blog/2015/june/23/chambers-who- make-a-world-of-difference-to-their-communities/

You might have thought the days of the vertical factory were long over. Glasgow had at least one, in the old Gray & Dunn biscuit factory beside the M8. It’s the building that’s now fully dressed in the ‘People Make Glasgow’ branding, near to the Kingston Bridge. But only last Tuesday a brand new four-storey

factory was opened in Inchinnan by Thermo Fisher. I was able to attend the launch and it’s a rare breed… Read more at: www glasgowchamberof commerce.com/blog/2015/june/23/new-thermo- fisher-plant-is-a-vertical-investment-with-a- difference/
