GLASGOW SET TO WELCOME THE WORLD
The world’s elite gymnasts are coming to Glasgow
I
n a number of ways the World Gymnastics Championships Glasgow is hosting from 23 October to 1 November will be bigger than the Commonwealth Games 2014. Crucially, the Gymnastics Championships
are expected to atract an even bigger TV audience than the most successful Commonwealth Games did. A total of 615 gymnasts from 91 countries
will participate in the event, which includes key opportunities to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games, now only 10 months away. Te Glasgow event will include competitors
from Honduras and the Cayman Islands, which have never before sent representatives to the 10-day event.
Its events will feature gymnastics stars such
as reigning World Champion Kohei Uchimura of Japan and Simone Biles of the US, both of whom will be striving in Glasgow to break world title records. Uchimura, who is widely recognised as one
of the greatest male gymnasts in history, will be going for his sixth consecutive world all-around title, something no man has ever achieved. Unbeaten in world all-around competition
since the 2008 Olympic Games, Uchimura has enjoyed a long reign at the pinnacle of the sport and is expected to produce another remarkable performance in Glasgow. Biles will be atempting to win her third world all-round crown. Te 18 year old originally from
Ohio is atempting to become the first woman in history to win three titles in a row. Te presence of these stars and expected
world-beating performances will spark interest with TV audiences around the world in addition to spectators who will come to the city for the event, furthering Glasgow’s reputation for puting on big events, particularly sporting competitions. Beth Tweddle MBE, Britain‘s most successful
gymnast who spoke at a Glasgow Talk in July, said: “I love Glasgow, the people are brilliant and I always feel so at home here.“Walking into that stadium and hearing the home crowd roar will be brilliant for the British team.
