Gordon Matheson
Praise for outgoing City Council Leader
Outgoing City Council Leader Gordon Matheson has left a lasting legacy for the city, according to Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. Mr Patrick said that there were
two major legacies that stood out from Mr Matheson’s term as Council Leader. “Firstly, there was what is accepted as the most successful ever Commonwealth Games, with the resulting rise in tourism visitors we are now seeing. “Secondly, there was the securing
of the £1 billion-plus City Deal that gives us a pipeline of investment in infrastructure for many years ahead. “But in fact his achievements go
far beyond these. Throughout his time in power, Gordon’s administration has fully grasped the basic importance of growing industry in the city to make sure the jobs are there for Glaswegians and has worked well with industry and academia to make that happen.” Mr Patrick said that Councillor
Matheson had “paid close attention to the issues which directly affect business and the economic development of the city. He established the independent Glasgow Economic Commission early in his administration and has been busily
implementing their recommendations ever since.”
He added that the Council Leader had “been a champion of many of the growth sectors – like renewable energy, engineering and the health and life sciences from which Glasgow and its people will earn their living in the years ahead”. Mr Patrick said: “His chairmanship
of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau has seen it holding the title of the UK’s most successful convention bureau throughout and he has worked vigorously to attract investment to the city, including helping to bring more airlines to Glasgow Airport. “His administration has seen the
encouragement of new developments such as the new Grade ‘A’ office developments in the city centre and research facilities at the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, all of which are housing growing businesses.
“In addition, his administration
supported a steady improvement in the education of Glasgow’s young people, resulting in better exam results in our secondary schools and far fewer school leavers now going into unemployment. “We wish Gordon well in what he does in future.”
