Charting the road to Rio 2016

In early August two of the leading organisers of the gymnastics event were in Glasgow to conduct the draw for the qualifying rounds. Nellie Kim and Steve Butcher, Presidents of the

Federation of International Gymnastics Technical Committee, conducted the draw that will have a key effect on teams’ strategy and preparation for the competition. The qualification rounds for both men and women

have a further significance in this year’s event, as the top eight teams who qualify for the final will also secure their place for the team competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In addition, gymnasts who earn a medal in Individual Apparatus Event Finals in Glasgow also qualify directly for the Rio Games, provided they come from a country whose team has not already qualified. The top 24 women’s and the top 24 men’s teams

from the 2014 Championships – which were held in Nanning, China – will compete in Glasgow 2015 along with 287 individual gymnasts from other nations.

The record entry in the women’s competition (297) has now been divided into 12 subdivisions held over the opening two qualification days (23 and 24 October) with the session times extended, which will allow spectators to see even more gymnastics action than ever before. The eight men’s Subdivisions will go ahead as originally scheduled over the following two days (25 and 26 October). Great Britain men’s and women’s teams have both ended up with Brazil, the 2016 Olympics hosts, in their respective subdivisions. The British women will compete in Subdivision 4

on day one of the Championships (Friday 23 October) in the afternoon/evening session along with Brazil and two mixed country groups. Italy, Russia, Poland and Germany will also be in action later in that session. Drawn in the least preferred Subdivision 1,

Britain’s men will be looking to the home crowd for maximum support when they also pair up with Brazil, Puerto Rico and three mixed country groups in the morning session of day three (Sunday 25 October).
