In addition to court-based clients, the lab can build new revenue


streams by marketing itself to private companies in an effort to obtain their workplace drug testing business. Te local Chamber of Commerce is a good place to get a list of local companies. All lab techs should be DOT certified and able to do DOT and HHS collections. Tese private clients should quickly be taken to a separate area to fill out the chain of custody and provide an unobserved sample. Many small businesses want to drug test their employees but do not know how. Te marketing material should contain enough details and the process should be simple and quick enough so that even the smallest business will want to use the lab. Once the private client base begins to grow, volume rather than high cost per test, will provide the lab with additional revenue. With a clear vision of what the drug screening lab should look


like, the goals of ensuring the integrity of collections, practicing fiscal responsibility and providing good customer service can easily be met. Following these good sense strategies will help lab personnel achieve these goals. 

Allison Duffy, MNM, is a Program Manager for St Lucie County in Florida and manages the County’s two Labs located inside the St Lucie County Courthouse and next to the Okeechobee County Courthouse in Okeechobee. The Labs process almost 30,000 drug tests per year.
