Moldova is a small nation squeezed between Romania and politically volatile Ukraine. Once part of the Soviet Union, it is widely regarded as one of the very poorest countries in Europe. In Cornesti, a city of a few thou- sand, I had the distinct impression that, even in this urban area, little had changed since the Cold War. It was easy to see the people here lived a very hard life, but it was just as easy to sense a pervasive cloud of de- pression hovering in the air like a dense fog.


Ghiorghi Cazacu, our WME ministry partner in Romania and Moldova, helps relieve some of the despair felt by children in the Cornesti Orphanage, a state facility for children whose par- ents are dead, lost, chroni- cally ill or destitute.
