As I continue to gain age, and hopefully the wisdom that goes along with it, I am all the more struck by how much I lack. It’s a peculiar paradox. And if that realization is true for the natural realm, I feel the need all the more acutely in the spiritual realm.
We are constantly bombarded with messages about how to gain success and respect. To get ahead, we see peo- ple put their trust in things like power, money, politics, might, fame, education, beauty, humor, technology or tal- ent. And yet those things aren’t nearly enough to sustain over the long haul. The same people who worship at the altar of these things do not realize that when their lives are exposed to the Truth, they are actually blind, naked, poor, miserable and wretched. When these temporary things fade away, what is there left for them to stand on?
The only answer is a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. For every week that passes, I learn to ap- preciate anew the statement of Jesus: “Without me, you can do nothing.” It’s a humbling reality of Christian life. Without Him, I can do nothing. It’s just not possible to bear any good fruit without abiding in the Vine.
And then I am reminded of Whom I serve and what He can do. For it is God who girds me with strength, and He makes my way perfect. While the tasks and battles ahead of me are impossible with men, it is with joy that I remember with God all things are possible. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
And the humble will hear that message and be glad.
