throughout their facilities. Tese transmit bluetooth signals which can be picked up by mobile phones. Not only do they give airports real-time information on passenger flows, particularly at botlenecks, but they can also serve up location-based notifications to passengers. For example, you could see where you are on an airport map or be given directions to your gate. And the technology can make the retailers happy, with the technology able to inform passengers of how long it will take to get to the gate, meaning they could spend more time shopping, or special offers for a particular shop could ping up on your phone as you approach the outlet. Airports such as Miami and Schiphol in Amsterdam are already using the technology. And the technology is currently being rolled out to UK airports, including Gatwick, Stansted, Bristol, Southampton, Newcastle, Inverness and East Midlands.
WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY
When Google Glass launched, there was a flurry of excitement over the applications for wearable tech. Ten the company took the technology off the market. But that hasn’t been the end of the story, with the launch of a
slew of smartwatches that connect with smartphones. Te most notable of the line up has been the Apple watch. And despite the screen’s tiny size, a number of airlines have been quick to
see the potential and launch apps for the device. For example, the offering from Emirates serves up your boarding pass to the screen. American Airlines allows you to track the progress of the flight, and Air New Zealand includes coffee ordering for its executive lounges – even notifying you when your steaming cup of caffeine is ready to be picked up from a barista. British Airways’ app lets you view your flight number, route, departure time, flight status and a countdown to the departure
time, as well as the weather at your destination. In fact, the watches also have the potential of improving

Airport is trialling the use of the watches to send regular notifications to staff, such as if there are expected to be delays at gates. Hotels have also been geting in on the act. Members of Starwood Hotels’ loyalty programme are able to use their Apple watch as their room key.

HOW TO STOP LOST LUGGAGE IN ITS TRACKS WITH TECH
Virgin Trains is trailling an innovative new service that could spell the end of lost luggage. Te introduction of
HomingPIN™ to Virgin Trains marks the first time in the world that a railway operator has adopted the lost property recovery system. Te HomingPIN™ removes
the worry of losing something important by safeguarding belongings, such as phones, wallets, keys and bags. Up to 1000 Virgin Trains
customers will take part in the trial, with each receiving a unique PIN code to register on the secure website,
HomingPIN.com, together with a phone number and email address, which are never
shared. Customers also receive a luggage loop, key ring and a set of labels – each with their unique code printed on – which can be atached to their possessions. If a lost item is found by a
member of Virgin Trains staff or member of the public, they enter the PIN code on the website, which is then matched back to the owner. Moments later, a text message or email alert is sent to the property’s owner, who can then contact the finder to arrange the safe return of their belongings.
