AIR PASSENGER DUTY (APD) We at Glasgow Chamber are very keen that APD is transferred from Westminster to Holyrood. We want to see APD transferred and reduced to take down costs for businesses of transporting goods to market.
EXPORT PROMOTION Efforts to promote our exports are key to the future of our economy. We believe that a crucial contribution to this will be made if all the bodies seeking to boost international trade work together. The interaction between Scottish Development International and UK Trade International and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office needs to be improved.
IMMIGRATION People from outside the UK make an important contribution to our
economy. An inability to get key workers will hit the growth of our businesses. Post-study visas in particular are an important issue.
INDUSTRIAL POLICY Catapult Centres, set up by Innovate UK, are an important effort to transform the UK’s innovation capability in seven key areas and help drive economic growth. Here, we have an engagement with four of the catapult centres. This is something that genuinely can help us to be distinctive in international markets. Our MPs should support Business Innovation and Skills in this programme of work and help keep Business Secretary Sajid Javid on track with policies put in place by his predecessors in successive governments in this regard.
There is an important contribution to be made on these issues and we shall be keeping in touch with our MPs to encourage them to do that.
