EVENT REVIEW: BUSINESS BREAKFAST, 9 JUNE
At a recent Chamber Business Breakfast, we had a presentation from Fit for Work Scotland and Healthy Working Lives which emphasised the need for proper procedures when managing staff. This was a really interesting session which reminded employers that staff can be one of the organisation’s
biggest assets, and that failure to properly manage staff can result in considerable liabilities and costs. Managing attendance at
work is a good example. To what extent have you a policy that sets out your approach in managing attendance and capability of staff? By having proper procedures in place, staff (and managers)
know that issues will be treated fairly and consistently. Without proper procedures, different managers deal with issues differently creating unfairness and inconsistency. One question that arose during
the presentation was how employers deal with an employee who may be less than honest about an alleged illness. What if the employer does not believe the absence is genuine? This
can be a difficult issue and specialist employment law advice should be sought. Having a clear procedure that sets out the employer’s approach can deal with the matter. Using the resources available to
employers together with a trusted employment law expert is essential to securing the best return from your investment in your staff. David Hoey, Partner, bto solicitors
