Essential skills for trading internationally

»Workshops focus on the key elements you need to understand F

or businesses increasing their export activity or for businesses planning to export for the first

time, the importance of having the correct documentation is imperative. Sponsored by our International Trade Partner, Clydesdale Bank, we deliver a series of training programmes and workshops every two months. In this issue we focus on three programmes that are key elements of our training schedule.

Letters of Credit and Understanding Secure Payment

Leters of Credit present tremendous opportunities and challenges to the exporter. Tey provide a relatively secure method of payment as long as the documentation is right. However, with the high discrepancy rates on first presentation it is difficult for the beneficiary to maintain security and integrity of the payment. Tis leaves staff stressed, accounts personnel wondering if the payment will ever arrive and the potential for goods to be held in customs due to non-complying paperwork resulting in additional costs and an unhappy customer. Understanding the

implications of each action from the initial enquiry is important. While the negotiators don’t necessarily have to know the detail of the documentation requirements, they should be aware of the implications of offering something that is not workable in a Leter of Credit scenario. Addressing costs are also very

important. Leters of Credit carry a cost and to ensure that cost is addressed, you have to understand what you are paying for.

this is something so basic but an intrinsic part of international movements. Te training focuses on the

skills manufacturers need to be able to export and import safely without losing money and more importantly, credibility, in the market place. Practical examples are used and open and frank interaction from the delegates is encouraged so that everyone learns from others’ experiences.

UK and US Export Controls and Compliance

Our programme demonstrates

how the beneficiary should take control of the situation, working with the sales and negotiating teams wherever possible rather than allowing the events to unfold. It also demonstrates the path documents should take, what is compliant and non-compliant and explains why.

Export and Import Basics

Tis programme is a perfect platform for beginners and intermediate learners who want to understand the structure of movement of goods. So many times customers ask why they are paying duty costs in the destination country. When asked what the Incoterms are, the response is blank. So, what is an Incoterm and why do we need to understand what it means? How can a business account for a cost if you don’t know what you have quoted for? Typically

Te aim of this new programme is to provide delegates with a basic understanding of UK and US export controls and the implications of non-compliance. What happens when a freight forwarder makes an entry on behalf of the exporter and they don’t enter the right information? Is it checked by the exporter and are they shipping Ex Works? Tis course identifies the

levels of due diligence expected by the authorities and highlights the correct action to take. It is an interesting subject and the day is filled with information which will encourage questions and provide a real insight into the authorities’ viewpoint. Tere is an open forum to ask questions and delegates are encouraged to bring along examples or questions that they may have.
