Going Out - Page 46

Don Pepe Buigues beamed with delight and happiness as the vehicle was formally handed over to him on Thursday 7th May by Pat Bramah, President of The Asociación Benéfica. When handing over the keys, Pat said the vehicle, had arrived “just in time” as the old one was no longer fit for use. Pat continued by saying it was with great pride and pleasure that she was handing over the vehicle in the name of The Asociación

Thanks to the volunteers of The Asociación Benéfica de Teulada, Afa Alzheimer Teulada now have a new vehicle.

on behalf of all the volunteers. She said that although the vehicle itself had been purchased by the Asociación at a cost of €25,500, she would like to acknowledge the contribution of The Teulada/Moraira Lions and The Amigos de Benitachell for supplying funds to buy the hydraulic chair lift, an essential extra item (see below). Don Pepe said he couldn’t thank the Asociación enough for their generosity. Antonio Joan Bertomeu, The Alcalde, then expressed his gratitude on behalf of himself and the Townhall for the Asociacion’s hard work in supporting the local community: (the Asociación a few years ago purchased an ambulance which is administered by Protección Civil Teulada/Moraira under the umbrella of the Townhall).

The presentation was drawn to a close by the local Cura with prayers and a blessing of the vehicle. The Asociación needs more volunteers: if you can spare a morning a week and would like to help our worthy causes, please pop into the shop and ask to speak to the daily representative. We are situated in the Av Mediterrañeo, Teulada. Afa Alzheimer also need volunteers to help with their expanding OT programme, helping to stimulate and motivate the patients. Patients are of all nationalities, and come from afar as Altea, Calpe, Denia, etc ......

On Thursday, 7th May, several members of T.M. Lions Club gathered at The Alzheimer Centre, Teulada to participate in the formal handover to Afa Alzheimer, Teulada of a much needed new mini bus. The purchase of the new vehicle was funded by a single donation from The Asociación Benéfica de Teulada (see above) – a magnificent achievement – but T.M. Lions separately donated 4,780.80 Euros, being the cost of purchasing and installing a powered hoist at the rear of the mini bus to make it easier for anyone with mobility problems to get into and out of the vehicle. The handover ceremony was also attended by Sr Antoni Joan Bertomeu Vallés, the Alcalde of Teulada Moraira, who expressed his warm appreciation of the donation of the new mini bus to The Alzheimer Centre which is an important and well used facility within the Teulada Moraira area upon which a good number of local families rely for support.

Pepe La Sal Supermarkets present cheque for €825 to Teulada Moraira Lions

When, almost eight years ago now, Teulada Moraira Lions first mooted the idea of a food voucher scheme to go some way towards alleviating the very real hardship which the onset of the economic crisis inflicted on a good number of families living within the Teulada- Moraira area, Supermercados Pepe La Sal were quick to offer their assistance and support, without which it is unlikely that the scheme would ever have got off the ground. That initial commitment from PLS has strengthened over the years to the extent where, as well as being integral to the success of T.M. Lions´ food voucher scheme, which last year was expanded to include Benitachell, this local, family run, supermarket chain regularly donates to T.M. Lions significant quantities of fresh and frozen foodstuffs which are nearing their “sell-

by” dates. T.M. Lions, in turn, work closely with Caritas in Moraira to ensure that this food goes to where it is most needed. In addition to working directly with Teulada Moraira Lions, PLS offer their loyalty card customers the option of gifting their accumulated loyalty points to nominated charities, including T.M. Lions, instead of redeeming them against the cost of groceries in the usual way. This initiative has proven so successful that T.M. Lions President, Colin Lilley and the Club´s PLS Liaison Officer, John Evans, were invited along to PLS´s flagship store on the Ctra. Moraira Calpe on 21st May to be presented with a cheque for €825.00, being the value of the loyalty points which PLS customers had kindly gifted to T.M. Lions. At the same time, PLS also presented cheques to the President of La Cruz Roja; the Chairman of the Management Board of The Alzheimer Centre, Teulada; and a member of La Protectora d´Animales, Benissa. Congratulations and a big THANK YOU to Supermercados Pepe La Sal for being so committed to helping the communities within which it operates!
