A ‘walking time bomb’ defused at REMA. Last month we wrote about how if you are wishing to get back into doing exercise after
a period of inactivity, or if you have had an operation or some other treatment, or if you are prone to having or have had an illness or injury, then REMA is the place to go at the beginning.
This is because of the careful way that an exercise programme is put together for you, and the way that you are constantly monitored by the expert physios to do enough exercise, but never too much.
This month we can tell you the story of Mr S who, thanks to REMA, is still alive today to enjoy life. Mr S came to REMA for rehab after a shoulder arthroscopy. He already had a pacemaker fi tted from an earlier time in his life, and when starting his controlled warm-up on the exercise bike, Sabine who is one of our qualifi ed physios, noticed his resting heart rate was notably on the high side. Curious, she then took his blood pressure which was also high. With these two indicators she recommended him to seek immediate medical attention, which he did by going straight to Clinica Glorieta in San Carlos Hospital which is only a 50 yard walk away.
There he saw cardiologist Dr. Fernando de la Guia. The doctor performed a echocardiogram
and
saw that Mr S’s coronary artery and his major heart vessels were narrowed and Mr S was taken straight to
Benidorm Hospital and had open heart surgery. The operation went well and a couple of weeks later Mr S was back at REMA having a stress test with Dr. de la Guia. All now being under control, a programme was set for his cardio rehab, because as we have described before the heart is a muscle that needs to be exercised and re-trained after such an event. Also, rehab is extremely important not just for the heart itself, but also for the spirit of the patient, to make sure that they sense they are getting healthier, and can see improvement and feel progressively better.
Mr S has now been doing rehab at REMA for about 2 months and he will have another 2 months or so to go. (Cardio rehab patients generally come in for sessions 3 times per
week, although
in Mr S’s case Dr. de la Guia and Sabine decided it should be just twice a week to things slowly).

Mr S uses the bike and treadmill at REMA, and does coordination and stretch exercises. He follows a specifi c and special programme for cardiac patients, with stress tests halfway through, and again at the end to measure improvement. Mr S is obviously over the moon because as Dr. de la Guia said, he was ‘a walking time bomb’ who could have died at any time, so he was very lucky. Now, after the operation and rehab Mr S feels more secure, healthier and can continue with his normal everyday life. This shows the importance of monitored and supervised exercise.
