Every breath you take and every move you make Every bond you break, every step you take, I’ll be watching you.....

Don’t Take Breathing for Granted Breathing is something that we do naturally, and we rarely ever think about it unless it becomes restricted. May 5th was World Asthma Day, a day to bring attention to this condition, which is far more common and also more dangerous than most people believe. Thousands of people die every year from asthma, and millions more are impacted because asthma can diminish the quality of their lives. Do you regularly cough, splutter, wheeze or even wretch? Have you been putting it down to a cold, dust or pollen? It is very important for you to be checked because minor breathing issues if left

untreated can develop into asthma, and in

turn asthma can develop into COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) which is a serious condition, and something which you really do not want to happen. COPD is the name for a collection of lung diseases including chronic

bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive

airways disease, and people with COPD have difficulties breathing, primarily due to the narrowing of their airways which is called ‘airflow obstruction’. Whilst COPD is basically ‘manageable’ it is not ‘treatable’ which means that once you have COPD you will have it for the rest of your life because the damage that has already occurred to your lungs cannot be reversed. However with proper treatment it is possible to slow down or even halt the progression of the disease. Particularly if you are, or have been a smoker, or worked in a dusty environment such as a mine or factory, or ever suffered from allergies, then the chances are very possible that your lung efficiency has been compromised. Although the damage that has already occurred to your lungs cannot be reversed, you can slow down the progression of the disease. Stopping smoking is particularly effective at doing this.

Diagnosis and Treatment It is important that Asthma or COPD are diagnosed as early as possible so that treatment can

be used to slow down the deterioration of your lungs. Especially if you have any of these symptoms: • increasing breathlessness when active • a persistent cough with phlegm • frequent chest infections then you really should undertake a Lung & Asthma Breathing Test. Treatments for COPD usually involve relieving the symptoms with medication, for example by using an inhaler to make breathing easier. Pulmonary rehabilitation may also help increase the amount of exercise you are capable of doing.
