Page 35 When our pets get older

Pets, as all loved beings get old and become mature. At these advanced ages we have to pay maximum attention to their health.

Little changes aren’t always obvious but can be the beginning of an age related illness which, if noticed as early as possible can be treated more quickly so the pet will stay healthy for a longer period of time. The illnesses of old age which aren’t detected, will progress and will reduce the quality of life and make their life shorter.

25 or 30 years ago the life expectancy of a cat was 14 years old and a dog between 10 and 12 years old. Now we have seen these life expectancies rise to 18 and 19 years old for cats and 15 and 16 in dogs. This is a result of improving food and attending to illnesses relating to old age of your canine and feline geriatrics. And from this the veterinary specialty in geriatrics has developed.

In our clinic we attend to a lot of older animals and thanks to our great knowledge and expertise and the confidence of our clients, we can enjoy a longer time with our very good friends.

We consider it very important for your pet to have a check up at 7 years old, to include a meticulous exploration with full blood work and a radiological study, as it is from this age when they start to show cardiac, metabolic symptoms. Also checks on the reproductive system and for the presence of any tumours. At this age the nutritional needs change,

and we should adapt their diet to their new needs.

There are 3 fundamental points with older pets: prevention, nutrition and hygiene.

We look forward to seeing you in our clinic to give you the best veterinary service for “Older Age”.
