Female Focus - Also widely read by men Drinking water from the tap

Home is the place where you would use the most of your water intake. If you drink just plain water or making tea or coffee with it, it is important to have the best available water quality for your health and well being.

Water in itself is naturally healthy. If it is free from impurities, irritants, bacteria and harmful contaminants like chemicals and heavy metals, it is exactly what our body needs; regularly!

Yet, water needs to contain the right amount of natural minerals for our long term well being - calcium and magnesium are vital for our system. Unfortunately most of our domestic water is “recycled” waste water.

In different countries the domestic water quality may vary greatly. The way the water is treated by the water supplying company and the quality of the piping have an effect on what comes out of our (kitchen) tap.

If you are not sure about the quality of the domestic water do not consume it untreated!

Treatment options are: 1. Boiling - Boiling and cooling down may be effective for bacteria, but is highly impractical and does not remove harmful contaminants like pesticides (from agricultural activity) and chemicals. 2. Reverse osmosis - Reverse osmosis results in a very pure water, but is extremely environmentally unfriendly. For every gallon of pure water produced; 2 to 3 gallons are wasted in the process. It is very difficult to check if the system is doing its job properly as the quality of the membrane is crucial for its functional result. According to the WHO (World Health Organisation); consumption of Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) is strongly discouraged due to the negative effect on the human body. 3. Filtering - When the correct filter system is used and the filter media is replaced according to the manufacturer’s specification the system should be able to remove all of the contamination.

It is recommended you use a system that removes all odour and taste by blocking all particles larger than 5 μ followed by active coal filtration and finally includes a barrier for bacteria, viruses and protozoan.

By using “just” an active coal filter, you “just polish” the water instead of treating it!

There is one other major reason to treat your water; bottled mineral water – however low priced – is very costly for our planet. Think of it, pumping water out of a mountain into a truck, driving it to factory to have it bottled in to a plastic bottle and subsequently driving this bottle around to the point of sale, where it is taken home to be consumed leaving us with an empty plastic bottle.

If your carbon footprint is important to you and your/ our next generation, help our planet by NOT buying bottled mineral water but go “back to the tap”.

Filtered water is the best thirst quencher and the alternative for bottled mineral water.
