Gemma picks pumpkins during a class trip with Medicine Hat Christian School to Neubauer Farms
garden, giving children a chance to pick vegetables from what Neubauer calls the 'Sharing and Learning Garden.'
Neubauer says during the most recent school year, 1,059 students took part in Growing Minds. In an effort to expand the program and the number of students able to visit the farm, facilitator Tanya Ellis was brought on.
“In the past, we have seen between 1,200 and 1,500 kids a year and looking forward, we’d like to reach 2,000 to 2,300,” she said. “Based on the waiting lists that we’ve had in the past from teachers, we think there is enough interest to support those kinds of numbers in our community.”
In 2014, Neubauer Farms entered into a partnership with Agriculture For Life, a non-profit out of Calgary. The organization, which helps promote agriculture awareness, gave Neubauer Farms a grant to help pay the $7 per student cost for schools to tour the farm for the fall session. Neubauer says the farm is working with the organization to potentially waive the fees for schools during the next sessions.
At the end of the day, it is agriculture that continues to influence Neubauer.
“Agriculture has really made me who I am, it’s the fundamental pieces of my being,” she said. “I think that growing up on a farm exposes you to so many realities of life and so many life lessons that you learn at an early age. Celebrating
life, understanding death, because it happens on a farm, and the value of a hard work ethic, not looking at the clock to see what time it is, you have a job to do and you have to get it done.”
She adds, “For a lot of us who are from rural cultures, agriculture is our culture. Our communities and cities were built on the backs of farmers who were working hard decades or a century ago providing food. Today, there are so many fascinating things happening with regards to science and technology that farmers apply everyday to maximize productivity, to become as conscientious of environmental protection and that info needs to be shared in an accurate light.”
