capacity from 14 to 18 spaces.

“We are working on interior walls and plumbing now, “ said Raymond during a recent tour of the site.

There will also be an outpatient maternity clinic for high-risk pregnancies on the lower level.

Level two will house the cancer centre and increase capacity from 12 to 20.

The outpatient clinics, also on this level, go from 23 spaces to 36 and day medicine will increase from 12 to 19 spaces.

The hospital’s laboratory and respiratory outpatient services are also on level two.

On the third level will be the neonatal intensive care unit, increasing the number of spaces from eight to 11. The labour and delivery ward will go from four spaces to six.

Surgical procedures such as endoscopy, ophthalmology, cystoscopy and minor surgery will also be on level three with increased capacity from three spaces to six.

Level four will be dedicated to day surgery, a recovery room and six operating theatres compared to the current four.

Levels five and six will house the mechanical and electrical equipment for the building.

Work on the heliport on the roof has begun, said Raymond, who confirmed it will meet

Transport Canada’s requirements for both STARS and HALO helicopters. There is also a separate elevator for access to the heliport.

Originally the entire new wing was expected to be complete in the winter of 2015/16. A new target date of summer 2016 does not mean things have gone slower than expected, said Raymond.

“When dates are given at the beginning nobody even knows what we are building,” he explained.

Once various departments have relocated to the new wing the additional space in the old building will become available to expand the current emergency department.

That work is scheduled to start in 2017 and add 12 treatment spaces for a total of 36 and go from 1,142 square metres to 2,009.

How long that renovation will take has not been established.

Initially the expansion had been budgeted to cost $220 million. The additional $45 million has come from Alberta Infrastructure, which diverted savings from other projects that had come in under budget, said Raymond. ■
