Redcliff

The town of Redcliff recently filled a position which had been vacant since 2011.

Dr. Helgaard van der Merwe, who has been practicing in Medicine Hat since Aug. 2013, agreed in March to open a practice in Redcliff and become a practicing doctor in the town.

“I'm very excited, I've planned this for quite a while,” said van der Merwe on Mar 6, the day of his official announcement. “I had some sleepless nights while planning, so today is a big opportunity and big day for me signing this agreement.

“I've been working hard and looking forward to this. I'm very glad it's now official.”

The doctor said he chose to set up his practice in Redcliff after reviewing his patient panel and realizing a large number of his patients had been driving from the town to his practice at HealthWORX in Medicine Hat for treatment and appointments.

Redcliff created the Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee in 2014 to address the doctor issue in the town. Town mayor Ernie Reimer says he believes van der Merwe will make a positive addition to the community when his practice officially opens April 1.

“We're quite happy with all the input that (the committee) gave us with recruiting the doctor,” he said.

The town of Redcliff and van der Merwe will continue recruiting for more doctors to arrive in the town. Maclean says AHS is looking to add two doctors to the town.

Dr. Helgaard van der Merwe, formerly practising out of HealthWORX in Medicine Hat, will be opening up a practice in Redcliff by April 1, giving the town a full-time family physician.
