Achieving enlightenment in Youngstown continued from page 88
Those interested in learning Vipassana do so with a 10-day course at the centre. During that time students follow a code of discipline, which advocates abstinence from killing, stealing, sexual activity, lying and consuming intoxicants. During the 10-day course students wake up at 4 a.m., and spend the day learning techniques and meditating for approximately 11 hours. There are breaks through the day for further instruction, meals and consultation times with the instructor. Students are expected to stay silent (with the exception of prescribed question times with the instructor) for the duration of the course.
Law did her first course nine years ago, and continues sitting once a year.
“It just made sense to sit with yourself for 10 days,” she said. “You make the whole world spend a lifetime with you, and to give yourself 10 days to sit with yourself, it makes sense to give yourself that time. I really enjoy working with the community.”
Faulkner got involved in Vipassana through his wife, who had been meditating for severall years.

“I went back and did more because I just found I noticed a difference in a lot of things in my life,” he said. “I noticed a difference in how I was able to handle things. It just got better.”

“Although there was a few technical glitches, which we were expecting, it went from a students perspective, really well,” he said. “It was a pretty strong course.”
The centre's next
course in April is fully subscribed (Law and Faulkner say the number of students is capped at 60 students, largely due to space and comfort).
The centre is entirely volunteer run. There is no cost to take the course and once completed, students can leave a donation if they wish, to ensure other people can take a course. Faulkner says this is due to the belief of Goenka when he began practising.

“He felt the Dhamma (the way to liberation in Buddhism) was too precious a gift to try and charge people for,” he said.
