SCHULER SCHOOL

The province originally announced in spring 2014 that Schuler School would be modernized — but this was revised shortly after with plans for a brand new school, in part due to the old’s school’s age, basement, water table and safety.

The current school just exceeds 2,000 square feet and can hold a capacity of 187 students. This year's enrolment is at 63. The new school is expected to be built for a capacity of 125 students.

Provincial funding for the new school is approximately $5.5 million — but this has been augmented by a community that has come together to so far raise more than $1 million toward going above and beyond what the province will fund. This includes an increase to the gymnasium size, kitchen size and building a space the community can use for events.

Prairie Rose School Division expects tenders to go out this spring, with construction starting in the summer and the project completed by September 2016. Once completed, the old school will be torn down.

SENATOR GERSHAW

The multi-stage renovations at Senator Gershaw are now drawing to a close. With $10.5 million from the government, the project began almost three years ago, starting off with renovations first to Bow Island Elementary and upgrades to Senator Gershaw, and shuffling students depending on where construction was taking place. Among many things — and thanks to fundraising from the community — upgrades include converting an existing gymnasium into a fine arts performance centre, and building a new gym.

The current design plans involve replacing the existing gymnasium space with a fine arts performance centre instead. Building a new gymnasium is expected to cost $300,000.

Construction is now almost complete — with students moved into the new classrooms and out of the west wing soon, with plans for demolition of this west wing starting June 1.

NEW SD 76 SCHOOL IN RANCHLANDS

Announced in the fall of 2014 by the province, a new Ranchlands school will be for 300 students initially, with the possibility of expanding to 600. Timeline and financing details weren't included in the original announcement, although since then the board has received some funding for site preparation and to begin school design.

NEW CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN SOUTHLANDS

Announced in the fall of 2014, the new elementary Catholic school will be built south of Holy Family Parish, between 13th Avenue and Southlands Drive, and have a capacity of 250. It would be the first school built in more than 10 years for Medicine Hat Catholic School Division, the last being Notre Dame Academy. The new school will hopefully alleviate the high numbers enrolled at St. Patrick’s School in South Ridge. Although announced, the school division has yet to receive any further funding to move the project along.

EAGLE BUTTE HIGH SCHOOL

MODERNIZATION The modernization of the high school in Dunmore was announced in the fall alongside new schools in Ranchlands and Southlands.

Money isn’t yet in hand from Alberta Infrastructure for the project to go ahead but $100,000 was received for predesign work.

So far this includes a value management session to brainstorm how the building will be altered and fixed. Early plans include the addition of an industrial art shop, while administration is also looking at what needs to be done with the building’s roofing, outside walls and with any structural problems that might exist. As well, the site has possible drainage issues so PRSD needs to look into hiring a geotechnical company to look at building berms and drainage ditches. Everything at this point is preliminary — and could easily change once more funding comes from the province to hire an architect and move forward with the design.

w EASTBROOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

(Brooks) Announced in the fall of 2014, the project includes a renovation and an addition. This addition will then be home to students in the Francophone school division, currently located at Griffin Park Elementary.

HOLY FAMILY ACADEMY (Brooks)

Also in line for modernization is Holy Family Academy, which will see the demolition and replacement of a section of the school built in 1944, as well as interior upgrades.
