We really don’t need to say just how important brakes are. It’s why we take them extra seriously when servicing any vehicle that comes our way.
Most people are aware that your brake pads do wear down and they need changing at regular intervals. What many people don’t understand is that your brake discs are an equally important part of the safety equation. And though they’re made of hardened steel, they still wear down and need changing. In some instances, brake disc failure can be more acute - and dangerous.
All brake disks come with a manufacturers minimum thickness specification. Note, this is not a guide, anything less and you’re risking brake system failure. At every service we measure the disc thickness and will not only advise but strongly suggest changing disks when they’re approaching the limit. Now, we know this can be a bit more than you might be expecting to pay, but take it from us all here at Larry’s, it simply isn’t worth the risk.
So what exactly can go wrong? Braking generates heat - a lot of heat. You might have seen Formula 1 car brakes glowing - they get very hot. Your car isn’t so extreme, but they get hot nonetheless. So, when thin, this heat can lead to disc cracking, disc separation (where the wheel goes round but the brake doesn’t) or total unexpected disintegration. Common to all three is that you’ll press the brake pedal and could be in for a very nasty surprise!
There are other key parts of the braking system, such as brake fluid, ABS systems, valves, pumps and fluid. Considering the complexity, it’s a tribute to the engineering and design skills of the manufacturers, that when all is in tip top condition, it just works. It’s our job to keep your brakes, and all other aspects of your car in tip top condition so you can enjoy driving in complete safety.
