How can dental implants improve the quality of life of people with false teeth?
One of the most common dental problems is the loss of one, several, or even all of a person’s teeth.
Traditionally the loss of teeth was solved by dentures being fitted, mainly because of the lack of a really successful alternative. However, recent scientific studies on oral health are revealing the negative physical and psychological effects of missing teeth, and indeed the long term effects of wearing dentures. The psi (pounds per square inch) bite force of the mouth diminishes from 200 psi (in fact often well over 200 psi) to approximately 50 psi, and in those wearing false teeth for about 15 years or more, the bite force may decrease to as low as 6 psi.
This leads to a clear loss of the masticatory (chewing) efficiency, which in turn may lead to a reduction in the intake of healthy food, because the person will choose to eat different foods which are unlikely to give
a full and balanced diet. In turn this can lead to increases in the need for drugs to treat intestinal disorders and can even decrease life expectancy due to these nutritional deficiencies.
In psychological terms the side effects of the loss of teeth are very varied. Relationships may be affected, and new relationships may be avoided. And many people feel themselves to be “orally disabled” due to their inability to get along perfectly with dentures, and dislike the pain and discomfort that they can produce. Furthermore, in some studies it has been revealed that up to 88% of patients have reported difficulties in speaking correctly. Couple this with some being dissatisfied with the physical look of dentures, or the unsightly appearance of missing teeth, and some people’s self-esteem may reduce so far that they avoid further social contact.
Fortunately, today we can treat and prevent all these disorders and dramatically improve the quality of life for our patients who have dentures or missing teeth, through the use of dental implants. Dental implants are a few roots of titanium that are fixed into the maxillary (jaw) bones and allow teeth to be supported just as if they were their own. The major scientific and technical advances in the field of
implantology allow us, as dentists to do things that were unthinkable until a few years ago, such as the placement of implants into patients with little bone, the placement of implants and teeth being affixed the same day, or even the
placement of the implants without the need for any surgery. Therefore if you feel that dental implants might improve your quality of life, come along and see us and we can diagnose how we can help you. We can show you a recreation in virtual 3D of the implants that you could have fitted, and explain to you how we ensure the maximum safety and success of the treatment. The systems that we now use for implants, prosthesis and regeneration materials are of the very highest quality and all means that incredible successes can be achieved for the short, medium and long term treatments.
