What is domestic violence?
Sadly domestic violence is very common. There are many forms including psychological, emotional and physical. The abuser, male or female, has a desire to control and have power over partners or other family members.
I sometimes did group work in a woman’s refuge in the UK and there isn’t a stereotypical victim. The women were from different backgrounds, cultures and situations. Some took a long time to get out of their situation (if ever) for many reasons including because they had lost their confi dence, had too much pride, did not want to up-heave the children, were scared of the repercussions, or it was a case of better the devil you know.
Well meaning friends and family wanting to ‘rescue’ them were unable to understand that you can only ‘rescue’ someone when they have made a decision to leave and want to take action. At this point all the support is welcome.
John (yes a lot of men are victims too) came to see me with bruises on him and he explained his wife hit and mocked him on a regular basis. She had even moved her lover into their house and made him sleep in the spare room. His situation had been brought on by having been drip fed verbal abuse for years.
We explored the lead up to his current situation and his emotional state and he started to see how he had lost his power over to his wife. We worked together on his self esteem and confi dence allowing him to make his own decisions and to regain his power.
