Christmas Stresses.....

Christmas should be a time for giving, a time for joy and a time to spend with the people we love. Instead, it seems to have evolved into a time of dread for many of us. The present buying, the crowded shops and the prospect of shopping for, and cooking, a Christmas dinner which seems to take hours to prepare and minutes to eat, all this can contribute to that sinking feeling of dread.

Children are bombarded with advertisements for the latest toys and games and, in turn, they bombard harassed and stressed out parents and relatives with ever changing lists. To cap it all we are often expected to spend this so- called ‘special’ time with people we never see for the rest of the year.

The consequence of all this is that sinking feeling people get when Christmas cards appear in all the shops before many of us have had our summer holidays.

The body reacts to stress in the same way that our ancestors reacted when confronted with predators which threatened their lives....Fight or Flight. Great whooshes of adrenaline which had a place when lives depended on thinking fast and being fl eet of foot. Responses that were useful then are not appropriate when the challenges consist of a trip to the shops, cooking a Christmas meal or spending time with our families.

There are some simple things that we can all do to help reduce that Christmas stress; •

Look after yourself, have a bubble bath, read that book and chill out.

• Who said it all had to be done by you? Delegate, delegate, delegate. Your family will appreciate the chance to muck in and help and you will get some useful ‘me time’ Have a coff ee, a drink, catch up with a friend or even paint your nails

• Don’t try to be all things to all people, you will never please everyone.

Learn to take a deep breath and just say ‘no’ Sometimes that additional task can be the last straw.

• Don’t underestimate the value of taking some exercise, even a walk round the block will clear your head and give you some much needed time to yourself.

• Most important of all, remember that this is a time of joy and sparkle. Sit down and watch a corny old Christmas fi lm. Look around you at the faces of your loved ones, enjoy yourself
