The Spice of Life: Nutmeg


This aromatic spice is derived from the egg-shaped seed of the Nutmeg tree which is ready to harvest around 7 years after it has been planted and gives its fullest crops after 20 years. A few hundred years ago, nutmeg was one of the most valuable and sought after spices.


Nowadays it is available all year round and is similar in fl avour to mace which is the red coating of the hard seed inside the fruit, with the nutmeg itself being the nut (or seed). Mace is a little more bitter to taste.


This is a perfect winter spice and is evocative of Christmas with it being such a super addition to mulled wines, cakes and bakes.


It is best to buy nutmeg whole, store it in an airtight container and simply grate it freshly when needed.
