Post-16 Options


Here are some of the common questions parents/carers ask about post-16 option choices


16, will depend upon their interests and strengths. It is important they consider whether they would like to pursue a specfic career, as some jobs will require them to study certain courses in order to progress on to further training or study in this field. You can find out more information about what qualifications are needed for specific careers by visiting the National Careers Service: phone 0800 100 900, speaking to a careers adviser at school or a course consultant at the Post 16 provider they are applying to.


There are an increasing number of education and training providers in Newham offering a wide range of courses and qualifications to suit all interests and abilities. More detailed information about these providers is available in the SUSSED magazine and website, as well as at the educational institutes own websites.


School 6th Forms (You do not have to have attended the school in order to apply for the 6th Form)

n Late Enrolements: it may not be too late!


If you have missed the enrolement date, there is still a chance to get a place on a course that interests you. Some colleges still continue to enrol students for two weeks after the start of the course.


However, be aware that your options are likely to be more limited, so it is best to enrol by the college deadlines in order to give yourself the best chance of securing a place on your chosen course. Contact the releveant 6th Form, College or Training provider as soon as possible to find out what is available and how to apply.


n Fees and Finance: Post-16


If you are under 19 and a resident in the UK for 3 years or over, full-time further education fees are FREE (this is subject to eligibility and status). Fees will be charged for commercial and higher education courses. There are sometimes costs for books, equipment and exams that you may need to budget for. The Government has introduced a 16-19 Bursary Fund, designed to help support those young people who face the greatest barriers to continuing in education or training post 16. Speak directly to the Post 16 provider to find out about their funding assistance policy.


n What is an Apprenticeship?


An apprenticeship is a system of training where you can learn skills for a specific career, while training and learning on the job, earning and learning at the same time. Apprenticeships are available in an extensive range of employment sectors and roles, from finance to construction and everything inbetween! The government is working with thousands of employers to increase the number of apprenticeships available. n I want my child to go into a specific profession. Where can I find out what qualifications are needed?


If your son or daughter wants to pursue a specific career, visit the National Careers Service, which offers search facilities for hundreds of different jobs and careers.

Listed on the website are not just the qualifications needed but also an outline of what the job entails, plus a list of further contacts that might be useful.


Be aware that, while you might want your son or daughter to go into a specific career, they may not have an aptitude for that type of work and therefore may be unhappy continuing to study for it. It is up to your son or daughter to choose his/ her own way in life and to make decisions they feel will serve them best. Your role would be to encourage, advise and accept who they are and what they want to do. If they are happy in their studies, they will achieve the most they can.
