Sussed Your Newham Options Mag

SUSSED magazine and website aim to provide information, advice and guidance, to all 14-19 year olds in Newham to help you make informed choices about your future. Why? Because you’re part of the 14–19 phase of education, 5 years in which all sorts of important things happen. By the age of 19 you will either be finishing off courses at a college, studying at university, busy in a new job, or doing some other exciting activity such as travelling abroad or doing volunteer work somewhere in the world. Whatever you’ll be doing, you’ll have started off on your life as an adult, and between now and then you’ll have had to make all sorts of decisions about what you want to do.

LONDON 2012 GAMES: A LASTING LEGACY

The 2012 Games gave Newham a stunning legacy of state-of-the-art sports venues, and one of the largest urban parks in Europe, the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park, neighbouring Westfield Stratford, the largest shopping mall in Europe. This legacy has brought with it jobs, investment and an enhanced reputation to Newham.

With an abundance of land for development, world-class transport and digital infrastructure, and a young, energetic and increasingly skilled workforce, the borough is ideally placed to accommodate much of London’s eastwards growth in the 21st century. By 2025 it is envisaged that a minimum of £22 billion will have been invested in the area, creating more than 100,000 new jobs. Hundreds of new employers are coming into Newham and you will want to make sure that you are developing the skills and gaining the qualifications needed, in order to take up the growing employment opportunities on your door step.

Ambitious and impressive projects already completed or underway demonstrate the existing commitment from global investors making their mark in Newham. In Stratford the game-changing Queen Elizabeth Park and Westfield Stratford City herald an exciting future for the north of the borough, the regeneration of Canning Town and Custom House continues to add to an exciting skyline, while the wholesale redevelopment of the Royal Docks, awarded Enterprise Zone status, has seen the completion of the iconic £60million Siemens Crystal global sustainability centre and Britain’s first urban cable car crossing the Thames from ExCEL to the O2 Arena.

As development and investment in the UK’s capital moves steadily eastwards, Newham is set to become a new heart for London. This is your chance to be a part of it.

skills training DECISIONS ... DECISIONS!

You are now making decisions about what to study in Years 10 and 11. You’ll have many more decisions to make about coursework and project choices, about work experience, which subjects and courses you want to concentrate on and what you want to do at the end of Year 11. You’ll also have loads of opportunities to get involved in sports, arts, music, volunteering, part-time jobs, travel and extra activities in your local area. You will want all these things to count towards what you do in the future. You will want to keep lists of everything you do, so that when you’re being interviewed for a place at 6th form, college or for a job, everything you’ve done will count to your advantage.

YOU’RE IN CHARGE, but Sussed can help!

So, welcome to the world of 14–19! Sussed magazine is here to help you understand how things begin to become more important to your future life, more exciting and a bit more complicated. You’ll need to be aware of the opportunities and choices you’re faced with. You’ll need to ask more questions about the courses you’re studying, where they might lead and how you can get the best from your studies. You’ll come across more and more information and advice services that will be keen to help you – they just need you to approach them. Tutors and other staff on the course you’re doing will always be a good source of help and information – but they can’t do or know everything. You’ll need to take charge of things yourself and this magazine includes some of the support groups that are there to help you.

YOUR COURSE: YOUR CHOICE

14–19 education is also changing and changing very fast. You will hear about all sorts of courses, areas of learning and work linked to different types of employment and careers. One way or another, you’ll be involved in studying or training in new skills from now until you are 19. This will involve learning both at and outside school – at college or university, in real workplaces, or through volunteering schemes. You may get that first foot on the career ladder by securing a job with training, or by doing an apprenticeship.
