Apprenticeships at Newham Council with the Youth Employment Scheme (YES).

The council’s Youth Employment Scheme provides an excellent opportunity to develop your skills and obtain a greater chance of gaining permanent employment with Newham Council.

The Youth Employment Scheme (YES) provides young people aged 16-18 years old, who live in Newham, with two years work experience. Trainees also work towards an apprenticeship in either: business administration, information technology or a relevant qualification.

Ariba Dar, Children and Young People’s Services “I am nearly a year into this apprenticeship and I already feel like I have gained years of experience. You get paid while you learn, I am currently studying for a NVQ L2 in Business Administration. I like the fact that we get treated like adults and as a member of staff. They put you in a field that you are interested in, I am working with Children and Young People and I get to work with the general public, which is something I enjoy doing.”

Newham’s Youth Employment Scheme (YES) offers trainees:

l a two year contract at Newham Council

l a training allowance starting at £180* per week

l a chance to add to your existing skills, making sure you get the right training, experience and qualifications

l a programme tailored to suit your individual needs

l invaluable work experience

l an opportunity to gain a relevant work–based qualification, leading to an apprenticeship

l support and advice from the Newham YES co-ordinator, your manager and your assessor.

“The YES scheme is a wonderful opportunity to show your potential and demonstrate what the youth of today can do. It is a fantastic chance to interact and work in a professional environment with people who expertise in different areas and are able to share their knowledge with you.

I was recently shortlisted for an award ‘best contribution by a new apprentice’. It’s a real achievement how quickly I’ve progressed and I’m so pleased that my hard work and effort has been recognised.”
