Parents!
The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games put Newham in the international spotlight and have driven change in the borough at an unprecedented pace. We are already seeing the benefits of the regeneration in the north of the borough, with the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, world class sporting venues, new homes and a new secondary school, Chobham Academy, along with Westfield Shopping Centre. The regeneration of Canning Town and Custom House continues to add to an exciting skyline, while the wholesale redevelopment of the Royal Docks, with its recently awarded Enterprise Zone status, has seen the opening of the new Siemens Crystal global sustainability centre and the Emriates Cable Car crossing the Thames from the ExCel to the O2 Arena. Not only are these developments bringing new leisure, hospitality, retail, office and housing resources to the borough, but they are also providing many new jobs in a range of employment sectors, from construction to media. As the development and investment in London moves eastwards, Newham is set to become the heart of London and we want to make sure that young people in Newham are able to gain the maximum opportunities from all these changes.

Raising the Participation Age (RPA)
The economy and the world of employment are changing, new jobs are being created and many will be more demanding and more complicated requiring new skills. More and more jobs in the future will require a higher level of skills, training and qualifications. In turn, the government have decided to raise the participation age (RPA) to help to prepare our young people for successful careers and equip the UK workforce for the demands of the 21st Century.
The government has increased the age to which all young people in England must continue in education or training. Government RPA policy states that:
• Those young people who left Year 11 in 2013 are required to remain in learning until they are 17
• Those leaving Year 11 from 2014 onwards will need to remain in learning until they are 18
This does not necessarily mean staying in school or college; young people have a choice about how they continue in education or training post-16, which could be through:
• Full-time study in a school, college or with a training provider
• Full-time work or volunteering combined with part-time education or training
• An apprenticeship 29
Sussed’s 4-page guide for parents...
Sussed is Newham’s Careers and Options magazine, which young people have helped to design. It aims to help young people make informed choices about their future. Parents/ Carers also need to know what it is about and why it is important..
Supporting young people...
We all have a responsibility to help support young people over these coming years, be we do not possess every scrap of information on young people’s possible interests or options. Your child’s school is a good place to start as they are required to provide access to independent impartial careers guidance for their pupils from Yr8–Yr13 and are experienced with a wealth of knowledge and support systems to help young people choose their options. Importantly, more employers and universities are involved and supporting the work of schools and colleges in Newham.
The aim of the SUSSED Careers and Options magazine and website
www.newhamsussed.co.uk, is to bring together a range of information and contacts, to help young people make informed choices about their future. In SUSSED you will find details of all the Post-16 providers in Newham, information about a range of careers, student finance, university, volunteering, CV and interview skills, experiences of Newham students and much more! Students and Parent/Carers can also find more information on our Newham SUSSED facebook page and by following us on Twitter: @NewhamSUSSED.
