Jonathan Bennett elected as Young Mayor


Jonathan Bennett aged 15, was elected as the seventh Young Mayor of Newham. He attends Cumberland School and received 1,320 votes. His key manifesto promise was to ensure access to worthwhile opportunities for young people in the borough and ensure young people can generate their own personal income.


Sixteen year-old Adam Khaliq from Langdon School was declared the new Deputy Young Mayor, receiving 1,294 votes. Runner up candidates will help form this year’s Youth Council supporting and advising the Young Mayor and his Deputy.


More than 73% of the borough’s young people turned up to vote, the highest turn out of any Young Mayor election so far.


The Young Mayor will be allocated a £25,000 budget and he along with the youth council will decide how the money is spent including local projects providing activities for young people.


Jonathan Bennet Young Mayor of Newham said: “I’m really excited to be Young Mayor. I see this as a fantastic opportunity to make a difference to the lives of young people in the borough. I want to ensure that Newham’s young people are consulted and involved in decisions affecting them and that they can access opportunities that will benefit them in the long run”.


Among the achievements of previous Young Mayors have been delivering Newham’s joint Olympic Stadium Bid to Downing Street, campaigning for young people to be involved in volunteering opportunities during the Games.
