Idris Elba was born in Hackney and grew up in East Ham. Elba went to school in Newham, Canning Town, where he first became interested in acting. As a youngster, he began helping an uncle with his wedding DJ business, within a year, he had started his own DJ company with some of his friends. Elba won a place in the National Youth Music Theatre, thanks to a £1,500 Prince’s Trust grant (
www.princes-trust.org.uk). He is best known for his role in the HBO series, The Wire, and starring as Nelson Mandela in the story about the great leader’s life, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
