Careers in Construction HELP INFLUENCE, BUILD AND TRANSFORM! Electricians Carpenters & Joiners Construction site manager Planners

Studying Construction will help you explore how your physical environment is designed, created, valued and used by individuals and communities. It will also enable you to develop skills to help influence, build and even transform the landscape of your future. The construction industry is one of the biggest in the UK and with the extensive regeneration projects in East London, there are growing employment opportunities in the sector locally. If you choose to study construction, you will become more familiar with the range of job roles, be introduced to the professional bodies and frameworks that monitor the work and then see how your skills match up to industry requirements.

GEORGE CLARKE

Architect, lecturer, writer and TV presenter

As both George’s grandfathers were builders, he gained a lot of work experience on building sites and decided at a young age that he would like to become an architect and gained a junior role at a local firm after leaving school. He then went on to college to study for a BTEC in Building and Construction, progressing on to Newcastle University to gain a First Class BA Honours in Architectural Studies and a Certificate in Architectural Practice, followed by a Post-Graduate Diploma from the Bartlett School of Architecture. As a student George supported himself financially by renovating people’s homes in his spare time. George progressed on from working for architecture firms, to setting up his own company and writing books on architecture, which led to his role as lecturer at Newcastle University and Nottingham’s University School for the Built Environment.

George now presents a range of architecture themed shows on Channel 4, including The Restoration Man and George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. He is also an ambassador for the housing and homeless charity Shelter (http://england.shelter.org.uk) and a Building Community ambassador for the Prince’s Foundation (www.princes-foundation.org).
