Negotiations on the horizon

In a few short weeks, we will all know the result of one of the most important votes in Scotland’s modern history. I must admit I am enjoying the fantastic buzz around the city with the Commonwealth Games legacy alongside the anticipation over the Scottish referendum. Here at Glasgow Chamber of Commerce,

representing the interests of our members in Glasgow, we are making our small contribution to helping everyone get a better understanding of the economic questions surrounding the referendum vote. We have members who will vote ‘No’ to an independent Scotland while others will vote ‘Yes’. This is entirely right, because it is a personal vote. We face the unknown, which is never

the best platform for growing business, but I feel our members have shown the proper level of scepticism and caution about both sides of the argument. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of our constitutional committee who

have set the direction for our discussion. Members of Glasgow Chamber have also contributed to the Scottish Chamber survey in May, working in partnership with economist Prof David Bell of Stirling University (see pages 28 and 29). I was delighted that we have been able to give our members the opportunity to explore the issues with the two campaigns. Both meetings were well attended and questions were raised and answered without rancour. More recently, members have been kind enough to respond to my blogs where I have been wearing

my Glasgow-tinted spectacles. As our President says in his

introduction, many questions raised by our members will not be answered, indeed, cannot be answered. Realistically,

we have to acknowledge that hypothetical issues being considered will never be sorted until negotiations begin. And let us be clear: negotiations will go on if there is a ‘No’ vote as well as a ‘Yes’ vote. This has been promised by all of our political parties.

At times, the debate has been characterised

by Cassandra on one side telling us the skies will fall and on the other by Dr Pangloss telling us about a rosy view of a better future. Hopefully, our involvement helped clear away some of the myths but a long list of questions remain unanswered. Whatever the outcome, we want to see the

debate about wealth creation moved up several gears. The Glasgow economy has enjoyed significant investment because of the Commonwealth Games. However, so much more needs to be done in

investing in our transport infrastructure to allow businesses to flourish. Our housing still needs to meet the aspirations of modern living and we must do much more to ensure Glasgow has the right skills and levels of education to support our digital economy. Here, Glasgow’s universities, colleges and places

of learning play a fundamental role in shaping our future. All of this feeds into the dynamo for Glasgow: our businesses, which provide the products and services that we can export around the globe. The health of our nation depends on a strong and sustainable Glasgow – that has to be our focus once the referendum dust settles.
