“It looks like Prestwick will be going head-to- head with Glasgow for passenger traffic. We are vigorously against this”
of UK regional connections than our so-called national airport.” Liz Cameron, Chief Executive
of Scotish Chambers of Commerce, said: “Whatever option, it is vital for Scotland’s businesses that access to this transport hub is expanded. Scotish businesses are looking internationally for growth opportunities and we need a sensible combination of direct air routes and access to hub airport capacity to realise our ambitions.” Meanwhile, Glasgow Chamber
welcomes the decision that Virgin Rail will continue to operate West Coast Main Line train services from Glasgow with a firm pledge to raise capacity and reliability. Te franchise contract has
been awarded for a further two years and nine months. Virgin will invest a further £35m to update trains and provide an extra 5,500 standard-class seats each day; with a further £20m investment to
modernise stations and improve waiting rooms, seats and shelters. Te Chamber also welcomes
the new 15-year franchise for the Caledonian Sleeper service, which has been won by Serco. From April 2015, Serco will be responsible for operating all aspects of the Caledonian Sleeper. More than £100m will be
invested in rolling stock, giving a dramatically improved customer experience – much to the relief of Glasgow business users frustrated by the antiquated service. Total revenue to Serco over the 15-year franchise period is estimated at up to £800m. Te new £100m fleet, built by Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF, and which will be leased to Serco by Beacon Rail, is expected to be introduced by summer 2018, part-funded by a £60m capital grant from the Scotish Government. Significant improvements include en-suite berths, pod flatbeds, and a brasserie-style club car.
