ADVERTORIAL MUSIC: IT’S ONLY FAIR TO PAY

PPL is the music licensing company which works on behalf of more than 90,000 record companies and performers to license recorded music played in public (at pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, shops, offices and many other business types) and broadcast (on TV, radio and online) across the UK. Members are legally entitled to be fairly paid for the use of their recordings and performances. PPL distributes the licence fees it collects to its members, and does not retain a profit for its services. Our work with businesses in

Scotland shows us that people really appreciate the role that recorded music plays at work, whether it’s customers in a shop or restaurant, staff in offices and factories, or callers waiting to speak to a call centre. Te results from a recent

survey we conducted among businesses on the benefits that

music can bring to the workplace speak for themselves: 73 per cent of bar and pub operators questioned believe that playing music can boost trading, while 70 per cent of businesses questioned agreed that music holds an influential role in their company branding – all helping to illustrate the potential power that playing music can have on the botom line. Also, businesses spoke of the increased staff motivation, productivity and enhanced atmosphere as a result of playing music to their staff and customers. Music has to be an important

consideration for businesses. All we ask is that any business using music is properly licensed, ensuring that the performers and companies who create and invest in the recordings are paid fairly.
