Rugby Tough European cup draw for team to crank up the excitement
Glasgow Warriors, supported and sponsored by a number of Glasgow Chamber members, has been drawn with Montpellier, Bath and Toulouse for next season's European Rugby Champions Cup. This will increase excitement for rugby fans in the city after last season’s brilliant run in the RaboDirect Pro12 rugby league when the Glasgow Warriors were pipped at the post by Leinster.
Warriors Head Coach Gregor
Townsend said: “It doesn't matter if you're seeded, you're going to be in a tough pool. That was underlined when Toulouse were drawn as the last team in our pool. It has won the European Cup four times. It's fantastic to be playing two French teams. I used to play for Montpellier and they have a fantastic stadium. Glasgow has played there.
“Toulouse has been one of the
top teams in Europe over the last 20 years and playing in their stadium will be a great experience. One of Glasgow’s best results was winning there a few years ago. Bath are former winners of the European Cup and one of the up-and-coming teams of English rugby. I can’t wait for our team to take on these excellent sides next season.”
Prime Minister David Cameron engaged with businesses from across Scotland at a recent Business Leaders' Breakfast event hosted by Scottish Chambers of Commerce
and Leader Gordon Matheson in working with neighbouring local authorities to secure this funding. “Tis City Deal has the
potential to deliver significant economic and jobs growth across the Glasgow metropolitan region. Te model has a proven track record in England, boosting the economies of many of our competitor cities. “We endorse the principal of
economy. Te Prime Minister has said that the City Deal is a partnership between Glasgow and the UK Government, but the Scotish Government will also be involved through match-funding. It will also mean that Glasgow
will be the first city in Scotland to benefit from City Deal status. Te local authorities in the city
region have been in discussions on the City Deal with the Cabinet Office for some time. Discussions
will also take place with HM Treasury, the Department for Business Innovation and Skills and the Department for Work and Pensions on the detail of the schemes. Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive
of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce said: “Te approval of a City Deal is fantastic news for Glasgow and the region. We would like to acknowledge the effort of Glasgow City Council
City Deal on two counts. Firstly, it will involve investment in economic infrastructure across the local authorities that make up the real Glasgow economy to promote economic growth. Secondly, it requires firm discipline in agreeing the projects, giving the local authorities a genuine incentive to choose projects that improve the economy and create jobs.” Councillor Gordon Matheson,
Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Tis is fantastic news for Glasgow and the Clyde Valley. It will help us to move to the next level in terms of economic growth for the City Region. We have been working closely together with the UK Government on this project for some time, and I am delighted to say it has borne fruit.”
