Bigger music awards will top a momentous year for Glasgow

Music fans in Glasgow are preparing for Europe’s biggest party: the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA). It is expected to be a who’s who of A-list celebrities and top performers. Bruce Gillmer, Executive Vice President

of Talent, Music Programming and Events for Viacom International Media Networks, confirmed that the awards on Saturday 9 November at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. It is the first time the MTV awards show is being held in Glasgow. The event, which showcases the world's hottest musical acts in a different city each year, has been secured for Scotland following discussions between MTV, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and EventScotland.

Matt Baker, of MTV and VIMM, told

Glasgow Chamber: “It’s too early to say who will be coming to Glasgow, but expect some announcements of big names and celebs in early September as we move nearer the dates. "The MTV EMA excites huge interest among British music fans, so it's fantastic to be bringing the show back to Scotland," said David Lynn, Executive Vice President and Managing Director for VIMN UK. "The 2003 show in Edinburgh was described as 'the greatest party to be held in Scotland in a thousand years'; now we're looking forward to delivering an even bigger and better experience with the 2014 MTV EMA in what will be a momentous year for Scotland and the city of Glasgow."

actor Peter Capaldi and Roxy Music star Bryan Ferry are leading efforts to raise £20 million to restore Glasgow School of Art's Mackintosh building after the devastating fire in May. The trio have agreed to be trustees for the appeal which the art school has launched. Pitt is a well-known fan of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Scots architect who designed the iconic building. Capaldi is a former art school student. Other trustees are Colin Grassie, the Chairman, Kelly Cooper-Barr, Dr Kenneth Chrystie, Bob Downes, Ken Ross, Muriel Gray, Tom Inns and Douglas Kinnaird. The UK Government has already pledged £5m, which is to be matched pound for pound by the Scottish Government.
