company email may go down and you’ll need support, which may be difficult in different time zones.”
Manage your expectations and be solutions orientated “I try to manage my emotions while travelling, expecting that something may go wrong,” Joris explained. “Tat way, when it does go wrong, I’m not spending my time and energy on being angry and shouting at someone at the airline. Instead, I use my energy looking for other solutions. “For example, I missed a connecting flight
from Philadelphia, because the first leg was delayed. Before we landed, I had already booked a hire car and a flight from Montreal. Even though I had a drive, the flight from there got me in to my destination earlier than the alternative, which was the next flight 24 hours later from Philadelphia.”
Pick the right line Joris, like many a seasoned traveller, will always pick a line (particularly at security queues) which has the business travellers, even if it’s longer than the one with families. “Te experienced travellers know what they are doing when it comes to what is allowed
through, and will move through faster than people who perhaps don’t travel as much,” he said. “I always do try to help those people, though, if I find myself behind them.”
Plan ahead for formal and informal meetings Lining up all your meetings in advance before you travel is a given, Joris said, but
informal catch-ups with contacts should also be given the same consideration. “One of the big benefits of business travel
is building relationships,” Joris explained. “Seting up informal meetings around the formal meetings – things like geting a coffee or a meal and catching up on a social level – is crucial, but I see too few people doing it.”
