Play Time Children love to play shop, and it is an
excellent introduction to the role of money and mathematics, and later on budgeting pocket money.
Make price tags and lots of paper money, or print some. Use real pennies. There’s no need to buy a plastic cash register, you could use a bun tin or cutlery tray.
Collect and price the merchandise – toys, books and crayons, or save empty food and drink cartons and packets.
You could use real fruit and vegetables (sturdy ones like potatoes, carrots and apples, rather than ones that can be easily squashed).
Take turns being the shopkeeper and customer.
On real shopping trips discuss prices and how you decide on what you buy, and what makes a bargain. Where do certain items comes from, and why are some more expensive?
In a quiet café let your child pay at the till and receive the change to show how money works.

Acorns have been captivated by the Disney movie “Frozen”.
The children in Wee Rather than shut
down the children’s enthusiasm and interests we have chosen to celebrate all things Disney!
As a group children were invited to vote for their favourite Disney movie, which gave children the opportunity to be involved in a democratic process and have their views respected and listened to.
The decision was made that over the summer we would base our experiences on the selected Disney films. We have turned a small area of the nursery into a cinema, where children can watch small sections of the weekly movie with staff, or the children can relax on comfy cushions, in a quiet space.
These films have taken us on a journey. Our role play area was turned into a jungle with swinging vines and home-made dens. Natural materials, leaves, grass and twigs were used to make collage pictures in the garden. Our jungle experience led on the Lion King. We explored the colours of the Africans plains, looking at traditional African art and made our own versions of an African sunset using coloured boards and playdough.
During Beauty and The Beast, our children designed invitations to invite each other to a fancy dress ball where drinks were served in china cups, like Chip! The Little Mermaid then took us under the sea! The role play was filled with sand and children’s art work of fish, jelly fish, and other sea creatures was hung above. A local expert visited with some special shore creatures, shore crabs and winkles.
There are still a few movies to enjoy before the end of the summer...
