Kate (8) bowls over the judges in school cookery contest!


She decided to make fish pie and banoffee pie for the competition final after trying out the dishes at home and finding them fun to make and eat.


Kate adds: “My twin sister Caroline and I cook a lot at home together and we enjoy making up our own recipes. Cook Club was great fun and I learned so much over the past year.”


Talented chef Kate Henderson proved she had the right recipe for success when she scooped top prize in Beaconhurst School’s Cook Club Contest.


Eight-year-old Kate, from Bridge of Allan,


was named `Beaconhurst Chef of the Year 2014’ in the annual competition which puts youngsters’ cookery skills to the test. The judges awarded Kate first place for her meal of fish pie followed by Banoffee pie in a close- run final.


The other finalists, Bruce Dickson, from Gargunnock, and Jessica Lifson, from Gartmore, came in just three points behind Kate and were awarded joint second place.


All three pupils were presented with chef’s whites embroidered with their names and engraved glass trophies at the school’s annual prize-giving ceremony.


Kate says: “I was surprised and happy just to make it to the final - so winning was the icing on the cake for me! My mum was really proud of me and was crying when I won.”


The competition was organised by Beaconhurst’s Catering Manager Marie Brunton, of catering firm Sodexo, and was open to all members of the weekly after- school Cook Club she runs.


During her sessions at Cook Club, Kate learned how to make pastry and measure ingredients and cooked a variety of dishes including quiche, cupcakes and Cornish pasty.

Kate’s mum Kris Henderson was in tears as she watched her daughter being named Cook Club winner and says the classes have been a real boost to the youngster’s confidence. She says:


“Cook Club has helped build


Kate’s confidence in so many ways and she absolutely loved every week. The chefs were fantastic and encouraged her every step of the way - she can now take any recipe and feel confident giving it a try.”


Around 30 pupils entered the competition taking part in several heats before

youngsters were chosen for the semi- final with the top three competitors going through to the final. During the final, they had to make a two-course meal of their own choice – spending a maximum of £10 on the ingredients - in two hours.


They were watched closely by four judges including last year’s competition winner Tara Mathewson from Bridge of Allan. Tara, 8, joined Mrs Brunton, school head chef Andy McDougall and Stirling University head chef David Ward to study the technique, cleanliness and presentation of competitors.


At the end, the judges tasted all the finished products including mushroom ravioli from Bruce, 11, and pizza made by 10-year-old Jessica. Mrs Brunton says: “Sadly we could only choose one winner but to me all three of them were winners because they did so well. It was a difficult decision but Kate just had the edge with her fish pie which was made with fresh ingredients and tasted delicious”.
