Students and staff at Monument

Dance Centre are celebrating a major success. In a fi rst for the area 3 full time students have completed Higher National Certifi cate in Musical Theatre, and following a recent visit from the SQA external examiner it has been confi rmed that they have passed the HNC with fl ying colours.

The delighted students – Lizzie Barnes (18), Ashleigh Wright (18) and Celine Beveridge (17) began the 1 year full time course last September and completed the fi nal performing assessments in singing, dance and drama a few weeks ago.

The success of the three girls also marks the launch of a new series of SQA courses at Monument for the 2014/15 session. A delighted Centre Principal Louise Murray explained “The girls were amazing to work with and Lizzie, Ashleigh and Celine have been brilliant as our fi rst full time HNC students. They worked really hard and richly deserve this success, we wish them every success for their future studies – all 3 have been accepted for HND and degree courses in Musical Theatre and Film and Media at College or University.”

The Centre is now enrolling for next year’s HNC , which is funded through SAAS and is a good basic grounding for anyone who hoping to make a career in performing or teaching. HNC students can also study for ISTD and RAD Vocational dance exams, including teacher training.

In addition a new, expanded range of SQA Performing Arts Courses is now available. As well as Higher Dance, Advanced Higher Dance, NPA Musical Theatre and NC in Acting and Theatre Performance approval has been granted for - NPA Dance (level 4 and 5), National 5 Dance, NPA Acting and Theatre Performance, NPA Preparation for Professional Theatre and new for August 2014 National Certifi cate (NC) in Dance. This wide range means that many students can begin earning SCQF and UCAS points and performing qualifi cations side by side. One new HNC student has been given permission to study at Monument and still attend her local High School part time to take Advanced Highers.

Louise continued “Although the SQA dance and drama courses are designed for secondary school students, we fi nd that some of ours – as young as Primary 7 - are ready to be entered much earlier as
